Wilhelm Büchner (1816–1892) completed an apprenticeship as a pharmacist before studying chemistry in Heidelberg and Giessen with Justus von Liebig. In his parental home in Darmstadt he had already carried out first process experiments to create coloring agents that simplified the new production method for blue dye. In 1845 he established his „ultramarine factory“ in Pfungstadt. He also participated in international fairs and was one of those honored at the Great Exhibition in London in 1851 and the Exposition Universelle in Paris in 1855. His products were eventually delivered to almost all European countries as well as to customers in Asia and America. He quickly became a successful and prosperous entrepreneur who continued to carry out research and experiments throughout his life. He also led the way with his political and social work, which is why he is today seen as an innovator of his time.
Besides his passion for technology, innovation, uniqueness, and entrepreneurial spirit are attributes that describe Wilhelm Büchner and also define the university. Wilhelm Büchner University is more than a name – it is our unique profile. The name also aims to raise awareness of Wilhelm Büchner in his own right and not simply as the younger brother of the writer Georg Büchner, who is perhaps more widely known. Wilhelm Büchner lived and worked in the town of Pfungstadt and with the university’s name we would like to demonstrate our close relationship with the town.
